Milwaukee Public Schools has closed its Summer Academy, Extended Learning Opportunities and all Milwaukee Recreation sites July 17 due to an ongoing dense smoke advisory for the area.
MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius and Milwaukee Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Totoraitis decided to completely close all sites, canceling all indoor and outdoor activities.
Summer meals will also not be available at MPS schools or MKE REC sites July 17.
“The poor air quality requires us to take proactive measures to protect everyone under our care,” Cassellius said in a statement.
District officials don’t anticipate the closure extending the Summer Academy session, which is set to end July 31, according to the statement.
MPS and summer rec sites also closed earlier this week, because of extreme heat.
