The heat index could push temperatures past 100 degrees as Milwaukee gets a major heatwave before the Fourth of July.
Temperatures next week will be in the low- to mid-90s, and eight- to 14-day forecasts show warmer than usual temperatures, said Kevin Wagner, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The heat is going to linger, he said, with the more severe days coming in the middle of next week. The heat index combines relative humidity with the air temperature.

What is a heat dome and why are temperatures lingering in Milwaukee?
Wagner, with the National Weather Service, said the heat is sticking around because the wind isn’t pushing the weather away.
“We are just not seeing those upper-level jet (streams) being able to push this system out of our area,” he said. “That’s why we are going to see heat sit and build this heat.”
Extreme heat is also setting records in Europe as a heat dome across the pond brings temperatures up to 109 degrees. Heat domes can last for days or weeks and they are high pressure systems that traps hot air for days or weeks.
Wagner said NWS doesn’t have enough information yet to see if the more severe heat will stick around longer than a week. But he did say temperatures aren’t cooling down that much overnight. Some days, the low temperatures are only in the mid-70s.
