Chicago Bulls sign Texas Tech basketball shooting guard Donovan Atwell

The Texas Tech men’s basketball team had a first-round pick in the NBA Draft, and now a second member of the 2025-26 team also will get an opportunity. Shooting guard Donovan Atwell signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Chicago Bulls and will join the team for NBA Summer League play July 9-19 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The signing was finalized on Friday, June 26.

Exhibit 10 contracts are one-year deals for undrafted rookies that include an invitation to the NBA Summer League and training camp. Each NBA team can have up to six Exhibit 10 contracts at a time.

Atwell, from Huntersville, North Carolina, spent his last college season with the Red Raiders after three years at UNC Greensboro. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior started all 34 games, averaging 13.5 points and 3.2 rebounds. He earned honorable mention all-Big 12 and made the conference’s all-newcomer team.

In Tuesday’s first round, the Charlotte Hornets took Tech guard Christian Anderson with the 18th overall pick.

What does Atwell bring to the Chicago Bulls? Here’s a quick overview.

College stats for Chicago Bulls signee Donovan Atwell from Texas Tech basketball

2025-26: 13.5 points per game, 0.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 0.5 turnovers, 34.6 minutes, 46.3% FG, 45.8% 3-point FG, 84.1% FT. Set the Texas Tech single-season assist record for 3-point goals made (130).

Three-year career at UNC Greensboro (2022-25): 95 games, 65 starts, 9.5 points per game, 0.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds, 0.8 turnovers, 22.4 minutes, 40.2% FG, 39.4% 3-point FG, 92.5% FT.

Strengths, weaknesses for Chicago Bulls signee Donovan Atwell out of Texas Tech basketball

Atwell’s value centers around his long-range shooting and defense. Over four college seasons, the lefty shooter made 341 3-point goals with 41.6% marksmanship. As a senior in the Big 12, his 130 3s and 3.82 per game both ranked second in NCAA Division I, and his 45.8% accuracy ranked third.

While Atwell gave the Red Raiders outside scoring punch, Tech coach Grant McCasland also trusted Atwell enough to guard opposing teams’ best scorers, including first-round draft picks A.J. Dybantsa from BYU and Darryn Peterson from Kansas.

Though it’s not really a weakness, Atwell didn’t have to be a top dog for the Red Raiders. Forward J.T. Toppin and guard Christian Anderson formed one of the Big 12’s best one-two punches as an inside-outside tandem, and forward Lejuan Watts and guard Jaylen Petty also got their points. When Toppin and Anderson were covered up, Atwell was able to deflate defenses from the perimeter, making at least three 3s in 27 games.
