Another pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Milwaukee, the fourth such crash in a week.
A 70-year-old man in a wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street about 9:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, on the 1200 block of West Atkinson Avenue, Milwaukee police said. The vehicle was traveling eastbound when it collided with William G. Spears of Milwaukee.
Police said the driver remained on scene and was taken into custody. Spears – who was identified Wednesday afternoon, July 15, by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office – suffered life-threatening injuries and died while being transported in an ambulance.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, but police referred charges against the driver to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at 414-935-7360 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 414-224-Tips or P3 Tips App.
The July 14 crash happened just two days after two women were killed in a hit-and-run crash on the 3800 block of North Teutonia Avenue. Police have asked for the public’s help in finding a damaged SUV that they believe struck and killed May Daiber, 48, of Wausau, and Amy Austin, 49, of Milwaukee.
At least two other crashes that claimed the lives of pedestrians have occurred in Milwaukee since July 7.
That night, Troy Joseph Lewek, 47, of Milwaukee, died after two cars struck him then fled the scene. In a separate incident, 45-year-old James Spears died after being struck by a box truck on Interstate 43.
At least 19 people have died so far this year in vehicle crashes in the city, according to the most recent Milwaukee police data available. That figure does not include the July 14 crash.
Sixty-two people died in traffic crashes in Milwaukee in 2025, police data shows.
