Luke Fickell updates injury status for QB Billy Edwards, C Jake Renfro for Maryland game

Wisconsin football coach Luke Fickell met with the media for his weekly press conference on Monday.

Two days removed from his team’s 38-14 road loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Fickell opened his presser with a look ahead to Wisconsin’s 2025 Big Ten schedule.

“This is now the beginning of the Big Ten season, and that’s where we’ve had to focus during the preseason,” Fickell said. “Not that the first three didn’t matter. Because they’re all huge…But the real focus was like, ‘guys, this is when the season begins.’ So hopefully it allows us to push past Saturday.”

Notably, after further comments on his team’s Week 3 defeat, Fickell also took time to address the injury status of both starting quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. and veteran center Jake Renfro.

“I don’t know on either of them,” Fickell said. “Both of them are going to have an opportunity to play this week. I don’t know how far along we are. Jake finished the game last week… but he’s [dealing with] an ankle now. [For] Billy, it’s just going to be day-to-day. I think he warmed up Saturday, and he’s continued to do things for us… At some point in time, we’re going to have to save Billy from Billy, but we also [need to] make some decisions as we move along this week. Right now we wouldn’t know.”

As he mentioned, Renfro finished the Alabama game at center after exiting the game with a lower-body injury early in the second quarter. The program veteran entered the game questionable, and he ended up gutting it out on the road.

Edwards, meanwhile, has missed two straight games after exiting the team’s Week 1 win over Miami (Ohio) with a lower-body injury. The program veteran transferred from Maryland ahead of the 2025 slate, and his status remains questionable as UW approaches a contest against Maryland, his former team, at Camp Randall Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday in Madison.
