A heavy police presence was reported in West Allis near South 76th Street and West Orchard Street on the afternoon of July 20 after authorities responded to what began as a suspicious activity call and ended with an armed man being taken into custody.
According to the West Allis Police Department, at around 2:20 p.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of South 76th Street after a caller reported a man was pounding on his door, saying he needed help and that someone was trying to kill him.
Police said the man walked from the caller’s residence before getting another call stating the man had broken out a window and gone inside a different home in the 1500 block of South 76th Street.
Officers confirmed with the homeowner that nobody should have been inside the residence and then observed the man armed with a knife. Police said the man told them he had a gun.
Around that time, a window of the home broke, and police heard a sound that could have been gunfire. Police have not yet confirmed whether a shot was fired.
Police established a perimeter around the home, and SWAT personnel responded to the scene. Authorities repeatedly ordered the man to exit the residence, but he refused. About 40 minutes later, the man exited the home armed with a knife, before officers ultimately took the suspect into custody after deploying less-than-lethal munitions and a Taser.
The man received medical attention from the West Allis Fire Department before being taken to a local hospital for treatment. No officers were injured during the incident.
Area residents reported on social media that around 3 p.m., they received emergency alerts on their phones and from Milwaukee County’s Office of Emergency Management, directing them to shelter in place until further notice.
Police said the incident remains under investigation.
