Former Wisconsin quarterback Mabrey Mettauer is currently listed as a co-starter on Sam Houston State’s official depth chart for its Week 0 matchup against Western Kentucky. Mettauer is listed with the ‘or’ designation alongside 2024 starter Hunter Watson.
Watson led the Bearkats to a 9-3 record in 12 starts last season. He completed 62.3% of his passes in that time for 1,811 yards, 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback also added 168 carries, 647 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

Mettauer, meanwhile, transferred to Sam Houston State this offseason after appearing in three games as a true freshman at Wisconsin in 2024. The Woodlands, Texas, native joined the program as a four-star prospect, ranked specifically as the No. 462 player in the class of 2024 and No. 31 quarterback. He was thrust into the backup position earlier than expected, as Wisconsin battled depth issues at the position after starter Tyler Van Dyke suffered a season-ending injury during the team’s Week 3 home loss to Alabama.
Mettauer committed to Wisconsin in part to play in Phil Longo’s air raid offensive scheme. The quarterback’s departure after the season wasn’t a surprise after Longo was fired in November, and after new coordinator Jeff Grimes began to overhaul the program’s quarterback room. His destination shouldn’t come as a surprise either; Longo took the Sam Houston State’s head coaching job in December.
The 6-foot-5 signal-caller is now threatening to win the Bearcats’ starting role as only a redshirt freshman.
Longo, Mettauer and the entire Sam Houston State team will line up against Western Kentucky on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
