Former Wisconsin fullback named Buffalo Bills 53-man roster candidate

Former Wisconsin Badgers fullback Jackson Acker is doing everything he can to make the Buffalo Bills roster.

Rochester First’s Randy Gurzi acknowledges the team doesn’t have many open spots on the 53-man roster, but Acker is a candidate to steal one of those.

With mandatory minicamp approaching, Acker knows this is his time to shine. Currently, he’s listed alongside linebacker Theron Gaines and running back Desmond Reid as the three players who have the best shot to make the 53-man.

“Buffalo is among a handful of teams that still employ a fullback, but they lost Reggie Gilliam to the New England Patriots in free agency,” Gurzi wrote.

He continued, “During OTAs, the Bills have two players fighting to fill the vacancy Gilliam left. Veteran free agent addition Ben VanSumeren, a former linebacker who turned fullback, and rookie Jackson Acker.”

Should the Bills decide to still roster a fullback, it’ll likely come down to either VanSumeren or Acker. Those odds are incredibly favorable to Acker, especially with his upside as a pass blocker and his pass-catching abilities.

At this point, the only thing working against Acker is experience. VanSumeren has three years of NFL experience with the Philadelphia Eagles, but it’s clear that, for now, the team is undecided which direction they’ll be going in.
