SHEBOYGAN – A former building used by the Sheboygan Area School District is set to be demolished and the remaining land readied for future use by the county.
Fencing surrounds the vacant Tower Academy building, 721 N. Sixth St., in preparation for site demolition, Sheboygan County Administrator Alayne Krause confirmed. Fixtures and any remaining personal property will be removed from inside before demolition starts in early July.
She didn’t know how long the demolition would take.
The county purchased the property, including the parking lot, from neighboring St. Clement’s Catholic Church for $425,000 in February, according to property records.
The church can still use the parking lot behind the building.
Krause said at the Feb. 17 Sheboygan County Board of Supervisors meeting that St. Clement’s had been talking with the county for nearly a year about selling the building. She said it’s in very poor condition, which is reflected in the purchase price.
The county doesn’t have any current plans for the land after Tower Academy is torn down, Krause said, but it has a history of buying property next to other county-owned facilities. The Sheboygan County Circuit Courthouse, Law Enforcement Center and Juvenile Detention Center are a block south.
Tower Academy, which taught at-risk students in grades 6 to 12, was formerly rented by SASD for seven years before it moved the program, called CHANGE Academy, to a building on North Ninth Street.
