Every Freep endorsement in August primary: Governor, U.S. Senate and House, state races

The Detroit Free Press Editorial Board has endorsed the following candidates in Aug. 4 primary races in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. In the primary, voters will choose one candidate from their own party to advance to the Nov. 3 general election. Because of the large number of candidates running in metro Detroit races, only viable candidates in competitive races were invited to interview for our endorsement.

Some seats are not competitive this year, either because a challenger has little chance against a strong incumbent, or no challenger has emerged. In some cases, we’re affirming a previous endorsement of a successful incumbent.

In many metro Detroit districts, one party has such a strong advantage that the winner of that party’s primary is very likely to win the seat in November. The Free Press Editorial Board may make separate endorsements this fall in seats with a competitive general election. Find your legislative district: U.S. House, Michigan Senate, Michigan House.

How to vote in Michigan

Local clerks mailed absentee ballots to Michigan voters June 25. Registered voters may cast ballots early, in person, in some Michigan communities starting July 6, and statewide from July 25 to Aug. 2 ‒ check with your local clerk for your city’s early voting start date, location of early voting sites and absentee ballot dropboxes for absentee. And, of course, you can vote ‒ and register to vote ‒ in person on Aug. 4, Election Day.
