CLEVELAND — With the MLB trade deadline looming and the Guardians already active in the market, Cleveland became lost and disheveled in its quest to bounce back against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Progressive Field.
The Guardians (56-56) regrouped with an eighth-inning rally, but it was not enough. They lost 12-8, suffering another defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks (59-52). A day earlier, Cleveland fell 4-1 in its interleague series opener against Arizona.
First pitch for the second matchup of a three-game series between the Guardians and Diamondbacks occurred at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 1. The game lasted three hours, 39 minutes, Cleveland’s longest in nine innings since MLB implemented the pitch clock in 2023.

Cleveland Guardians lose 12-8 to Arizona Diamondbacks
Kyle Manzardo led off the bottom of the ninth by hitting reliever Jonathan Loaisiga’s first pitch off the wall in center field.
Then Angel Martinez grounded out, advancing Manzardo to third base. Petey Halpin grounded out, scoring Manzardo as the Guardians trimmed the Diamondbacks’ lead to 12-8.
Rookie Travis Bazzana momentarily kept the Guardians alive with a double to right field. Patrick Bailey grounded out to second base to end the game.
Diamondbacks reliever Gerardo Carrillo (2-0) earned the win. Guardians reliever Hunter Gaddis (1-3) took the loss.
The Guardians have lost eight of their last 10 games.
Diamondbacks tack on two more runs in the ninth inning and lead Cleveland Guardians 12-7
With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the ninth inning, Guardians rookie second baseman Travis Bazzana fielded a ground ball hit by Corbin Carroll and threw out ldemaro Vargas out at home plate.
But Geraldo Perdomo followed with two-run single off relief pitcher Tim Herrin, giving the Diamondbacks a 12-7 lead.
Gabriel Moreno then lined out to Jose Ramirez at third base, and Ketel Marte struck out swinging.
Cleveland Guardians cut Diamondbacks’ lead with five-run rally but trail 10-7 after eighth inning
After rookie Chase DeLauter led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo home run, Kyle Manzardo and Angel Martinez singled off Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald.
With no outs, runners on first and third base and Petey Halpin in the batter’s box, Halpin received “Petey, Petey, Petey” chants from the Cleveland crowd. He proceeded to hit an RBI single to left field, and the Guardians trailed 10-4.
Rookie Travis Bazzana then singled to load the bases. After the Guardians hit four consecutive singles, the Diamondbacks summoned relief pitcher Kevin Ginkel to replace Sewald.
Pinch-hitting for Austin Hedges, fellow catcher Patrick Bailey hit a sacrifice fly to center field against Ginkel. The Guardians cut their deficit to 10-5 as a result.
With runners on first and second, Brayan Rocchio grounded out to first, advancing the runners.
Steven Kwan hit a single to left field, driving in Halpin for a run before Bazzana was initially ruled out during a play at home plate. But was Bazzana really tagged out before he scored? The Guardians challenged the play, and it was overturned after a replay review. Bazzana was safe, and the Guardians cut their deficit to 10-7.
With Kwan on second, Jose Ramirez walked.
Guess whose turn it was to bat with runners on first and second and two outs? DeLauter stepped to the plate again in the eighth inning. This time, he flew out to center field, leaving Kwan and Ramirez stranded.
But the Guardians trailed 10-7 after rallying with five runs in the eighth.
Chase DeLauter gives Guardians fans something to cheer with homer in eighth inning
On the first pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, Chase DeLauter awoke the Cleveland crowd with a solo home run to right-center field off Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald.
DeLauter’s 12th homer of the season traveled 414 feet and had an exit velocity of 104 mph.
The only problem is the Guardians trailed 10-3 after DeLauter hit it.
Arizona Diamondbacks add another home run and lead Cleveland Guardians 10-2 in eighth inning
The Diamondbacks weren’t done embarrassing the Guardians after a seventh-inning slaughtering.
Nolan Arenado hit a one-out, solo home run to left field off Guardians relief pitcher Will Dion, extending the Diamondbacks’ lead to 10-2 in the eighth inning. The homer went 388 feet and had an exit velocity of 105 mph.

Guardians relief pitcher Hunter Gaddis would like to have his first pitch back. And Cleveland would like to have the seventh inning back.
Geraldo Perdomo smashed a solo home run off Gaddis to begin the seventh, giving the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead. Perdomo’s homer to right field traveled 391 feet and had an exit velocity of 102 mph.
Later in the same inning, Petey Halpin made a highlight catch in center field as he hit the wall, preventing Tim Tawa from driving in a run.
However, Ildemaro Vargas got the job done during the next at-bat, singling to score Ketel Marte and lift the Diamondbacks to a 4-2 advantage with two outs.
Franco Aleman relieved Gaddis, and Aleman’s first pitch resulted in a passed ball, allowing Diamondbacks baserunners to advance from first and second to second and third. Then James McCann blooped a two-run double to shallow right field, and the Diamondbacks built a 6-2 cushion.
Aleman’s night didn’t get better. He hit Ryan Waldschmidt with a pitch and threw a wild pitch against Corbin Carroll. Shortly thereafter, Carroll blasted a three-run home run to center field, and the Diamondbacks went ahead 9-2. Carroll’s homer traveled 403 feet and had a 102 mph exit velocity.
Yes, your math is correct if you had the Diamondbacks scoring seven runs in the seventh inning.
Guardians and Diamondbacks tied 2-2 heading into seventh inning
The Guardians missed a chance to take a lead in the sixth inning. Austin Hedges struck out looking against Diamondbacks relief pitcher Gerardo Carrillo, stranding Petey Halpin at second base to end the sixth inning.
The Guardians have not scored since they earned a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
Diamondbacks leave bases loaded vs. Guardians reliever Colin Holderman in sixth inning
Two singles and a hit batter resulted in Corbin Carroll facing Guardians relief pitcher Colin Holderman with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning.
Carroll would have encountered a 3-0 count, but a review triggered by the ABS challenge system made it 2-1. Then he swung and missed to create a 2-2 count. Then he flew out to right field, where Angel Martinez made the catch on the warning track.
The score remained tied 2-2.
Diamondbacks tie score 2-2 vs. Guardians in fifth inning
With runners on first and second base and one out, Geraldo Perdomo singled on a ground ball to Guardians first baseman Rhys Hoskins.
Hoskins made a sliding backhanded stop, but he immediately tried to flip the ball to first base with no one covering it. The play was ruled a throwing error on Hoskins, and Ryan Waldschmidt scored to cut the Diamondbacks’ deficit to 2-1.
The awkward play was starting pitcher Parker Messick’s last of the game. Relief pitcher Colin Holderman replaced him.
Then Gabriel Moreno reached on a fielder’s choice out as Geraldo Perdomo got into a rundown and Corbin Carroll scored to make it 2-2.
Messick allowed six hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk in 4⅓ innings pitched. He struck out six. He finished with 91 pitches, including 61 for strikes.
Diamondbacks still scoreless vs. Parker Messick through fourth inning
Leading off the fourth inning, Ketel Marte doubled to right fielder off Guardians starting pitcher Parker Messick.
The response by Messick? He lured Nolan Arenado into a groundout. He struck out Tim Tawa. He got Ildemaro Vargas to line out to center field.
Through the fourth inning, Messick had allowed zero runs and three hits with five strikeouts. The Guardians led 2-0.
Guardians lead Diamondbacks 2-0 through three innings
With two outs, Angel Martinez doubled to left field. David Fry subsequently drew a walk.
Then rookie Travis Bazzana hit a line drive off Diamondbacks starting pitcher Kohl Drake, but Corbin Carroll caught it in right field for the third out.
The Guardians led 2-0 entering the fourth inning. They had five hits compared with two by the Diamondbacks.
Guardians fail to extend lead vs. Diamondbacks in second inning
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Austin Hedges singled and Brayan Rocchio was hit by a pitch on his left arm.
Suddenly, Diamondbacks starting pitcher Kohl Drake was in trouble, and Steven Kwan singled to center field to load the bases, only increasing the trouble with seven-time All-Star Jose Ramirez up next.
Unfortunately for the Guardians, Ramirez grounded out to second base, ending the inning with Cleveland ahead 2-0.
Guardians take 2-0 lead with Rhys Hoskins’ 2-run homer in the first inning
Facing a 1-1 pitch from Diamondbacks starter Kohl Drake, Rhys Hoskins launched a two-run home run 424 feet to center field. Hoskins’ homer had an exit velocity of 105 mph.
It was the 12th homer this season for Hoskins, who signed with the Guardians in February.
Guardians’ Steven Kwan extends on-base streak to 19 games
Steven Kwan extended his on-base streak to 19 games with by leading off the bottom of the first inning with a single. Kwan’s on-base streak is a 2026 season best by any Guardians player.
Parker Messick allows first two batters to reach base but escapes jam
Guardians starting pitcher Parker Messick endured an interesting first inning. He walked Corbin Carroll out of the gate and then allowed a single against Geraldo Perdomo.
After encountering runners on first and second base with no outs, Messick struck out Gabriel Moreno and Ketel Marte swinging and induced Nolan Arenado to ground out into a force out at shortstop.
