Ventura County Fire crews were responding to a vegetation fire in North Ranch on the county’s eastern edge Aug. 2.
The blaze, quickly named the Kanan Fire, was reported around 2:10 p.m. near Westlake Boulevard and East Kanan Road, according to initial fire reports.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Ventura County’s Office of Emergency Services noted that fire personnel had gone to the scene, according to www.vcemergency.com.
Around 3 p.m., the site posted that firefighters continued “to make good progress.” The county had not issued any evacuation warnings or evacuation orders, the site says.
On its social media account at 3:05 p.m., county fire officials said 130 firefighters, 55 fire apparatus and multiple helicopters attacked the fire.
Helicopters, the post says, used Bard Reservoir as its water supply. The fire reached about 5 acres before forward progress had been stopped.
“Crews will continue working to build containment lines and extinguish remaining hot spots,” the post says.
Portions of Westlake Boulevard were closed because of the fire and the response.
Residents were advised to be alert to changing conditions, follow any instructions issued by public safety personnel and to use their best judgment.
“If you feel unsafe, leave the area,” the site says.
The fire erupted as temperatures across the region reached into triple digits, and the area was under an extreme heat warning until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
