The San Francisco 49ers already signed one defensive end to help offset some their training camp injuries, but it doesn’t look like they’re content just adding Titus Leo.
As part of their Sunday workout the 49ers hosted a trio of defensive ends for tryouts. That group included Andre Carter II, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Xavier Thomas per the NFL transaction wire.
Carter is not related to the Andre Carter that once played for the 49ers. He went undrafted out of Army in 2023, but made his NFL debut as a rookie with the Minnesota Vikings where he played in 12 games and posted two tackles. He played three games the following year for the Las Vegas Raiders and notched 0.5 sacks.
Perhaps the most intriguing of the group is Okoronkwo, who has 17.0 sacks in 81 career games with the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. He played only one game in Philadelphia last season before sustaining a season-ending triceps tear. In 2023 he had 3.0 sacks in 16 games for the Cleveland Browns.
Thomas, a former fifth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals, had a promising rookie year where he had 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles in 208 defensive snaps across 10 games. Last year his role dwindled significantly and he played just 15 defensive snaps in four games before being waived. He landed on the Texans practice squad and was with them early this offseason before he was waived in May.
With injuries on the defensive line stacking up, it would be a surprise to see the 49ers bring in another veteran to help take up some training camp and preseason reps.
