Former Packers quarterback signs in the Canadian Football League

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Taylor Elgersma has found another new home as he continues his pro football career.

And, this time, Elgersma doesn’t have to worry about securing a U.S. work visa to play. He’s returning to his home country.

Elgersma, who spent training camp last season with the Packers, has signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, a homecoming of sorts for the 24-year-old.

The London, Ontario, native’s signing with Winnipeg comes a year after the Blue Bombers selected him in the second round of the CFL draft in April 2025.

However, he would later sign with the Packers in May and spent the entire summer in Green Bay, playing in all three of the team’s preseason games.

He had a solid showing but was cut at the end of camp, along with quarterback Sean Clifford, with the team keeping only Jordan Love and Malik Willis on the active roster as expected. While he visited with several other NFL teams during the season, he remained unsigned.

Elgersma then looked to land in the UFL. The Birmingham Stallions selected him in its 2026 draft, but he never played for Birmingham due to work visa issues.

Elgersma also threw at the 2026 NFL Combine in March after receiving a free agent invitation.

Now, it’s back to Canada, where he grew up and was a college star. He threw for over 4,000 yards and 34 touchdowns for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks as a senior in 2024, earning the Hec Crighton Trophy, the award for the U Sports’ most outstanding football player.

Elgersma is set to report to Winnipeg for rookie camp May 6. Winnipeg’s first preseason game is May 23 and the regular season begins June 5. The CFL’s season goes through Oct. 24, with the Grey Cup championship Nov. 15.

He was the fourth quarterback in the team’s first preseason game on Aug. 9 and finished 3-of-4 for 24 yards in his debut in the Packers’ 30-10 loss to the New York Jets.

Elgersma had a chance to play earlier in the Packers’ second preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts a week later, the first quarterback off the bench. He finished 7-of-11 for 109 yards and a 96.4 rating in the Packers’ 23-19 win.

In his final game with the Packers in the team’s 20-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 23, Elgersma completed six for eight passes for 33 yards and his first touchdown for a 121.4 rating.
