Downtown Green Bay bridges to close for scheduled spring cleaning

Seasonal cleanings and maintenance work will temporarily close two of Green Bay’s most traveled bridges over the Fox River.

Workers will take much of three workdays to clean, inspect and repair the Mason Street bridge, formally the Donald A. Tilleman Memorial Bridge that carries over 35,000 vehicles daily, and the Walnut Street bridge, officially the Bart Starr Memorial Bridge, both of which are owned by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Here’s what to know.

When is the Walnut Street bridge closing?

The two bridges will be separately closed on different days, with the Walnut Street bridge getting first treatment. It will close between Washington Street and Broadway on Monday, April 13 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for “inspection and routine maintenance,” according to WisDOT.

A detour will be posted to take commuters over the Main Street bridge instead, from North Broadway to Dousman Street, Main Street and North Monroe Avenue, according to Green Bay’s Department of Public Works.

When is the Mason Street bridge closing?

The Mason Street bridge will close from South Monroe to South Ashland avenues on Tuesday, April 14 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. for “inspection, routine maintenance, and concrete patching,” WisDOT said in an April 6 news release.

The following day, on April 15, only the outside lanes will close from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the bridge deck to be washed underneath, according to WisDOT.

A detour will redirect traffic over the Walnut Street bridge, from South Ashland Avenue to Walnut Street to South Monroe Avenue.

Will the Main Street bridge close?

Seasonal cleanings, typically in April or May, affect all three downtown bridges in downtown Green Bay. The city, which owns the Main Street bridge, has not yet announced a cleaning for the bridge.
