Door County park evacuated due to 'suspicious item,' authorities quickly deemed it harmless

Cave Point County Park north of Sturgeon Bay was evacuated briefly the afternoon of July 22 for a suspicious item that turned out less suspicious than first thought.

The Door County Sheriff’s Office received a report at 3:41 p.m. about the suspicious item located in the very popular park on the Lake Michigan shore, according to a post on the sheriff office’s Facebook page. Deputies responded to the park and initiated precautionary measures, including clearing the park and closing it to public access.

But investigation identified the item as a geocache container, an item geocaching participants try to find at specific location by using coordinates on GPS devices. The scene subsequently was determined to be safe and the park reopened for normal use shortly before 5 p.m.
