As Claire’s, a jewelry and accessory boutique, works toward closing 291 stores, three Milwaukee-area stores are taking the hit.
Claire’s at Bayshore Mall in Glendale and the one at Brookfield Square are closing, according to an Aug. 25 court filing. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel was unsuccessful in reaching either store for a closing date.
Claire’s in West Bend closed Aug. 27, according to store officials.
In addition, Icing, a brand owned by Claire’s that caters to women ages 18 to 35, is closing its location at Southridge Mall in Greendale, according to the Aug. 25 filing. A store employee confirmed to the Journal Sentinel that the store is closing, but no closing date has been set.
Why are Claire’s and Icing stores closing?
Claire’s has had financial struggles, USA Today reported. After filing for bankruptcy in March 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy again on Aug. 6, stating it may close as many as 1,100 stores.
However, the company announced Aug. 20 it would sell most of its business to a private equity firm, Ames Watson. In the Aug. 25 court filing, Claire’s Holdings LLC listed 235 Claire’s locations and 56 Icing stores that would close.
In the same ruling, the company listed 830 stores that would remain open — 785 Claire’s and 45 Icing locations.
