Brewers 5, Tigers 1: Four third-inning singles result in an early lead

DETROIT – The Milwaukee Brewers begin the second half of their two-city trip with the first of three interleague games against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Tuesday night, April 21.

Left-hander Kyle Harrison (1-1, 3.07) starts for the Brewers after being pushed back in the rotation due to a sore wrist, while right-hander Keider Montero (1-1, 3.31) counters for the Tigers.

Milwaukee tacks on some insurance in the seventh

After Trevor Megill pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning, David Hamilton singled with two outs in the seventh to jump-start another rally.

Blake Perkins followed with a walk, then Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesus made a terrible throw on a pickoff attempt, allowing Hamilton to scurry to third.

Brice Turang and William Contreras followed with run-scoring singles, stretching MIlwaukee’s advantage out to 5-1.

Grant Anderson puts out the fire

Harrison began the Tigers’ fourth by walking Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson with Hao-Yu Lee following with a single to load the bases.

That led manager Pat Murphy to pull the plug, going to Grant Anderson instead with Javier Báez due up. Anderson did his job by getting Báez to ground into a run-scoring double play and then striking out pinch-hitter Kerry Carpenter to leave it a 3-1 game.

Harrison, meanwhile, departed having allowed four hits, a run and three walks with three strikeouts over 72 pitches.

Blake Perkins with the home-run robbery

Jahmai Jones and Perkins were teammates on the Brewers for a very short time early in spring training in 2024.

The two became reacquainted when Jones led off the bottom of the third with a drive to left-center. Perkins, playing left, casually worked his way to the wall and then reached his glove up and caught the ball before it went over the wall while barely leaving his feet.

A home run in 18 of 30 ballparks, Jones’s drive ended up being a 387-foot out and Milwaukee’s first robbery of the season.

Detroit went on to put a pair of runners on with two outs before Harrison recovered to strike out Dillon Dingler.

The Brewers strike first

Small ball – or maybe The Woodpeckers? – got Milwaukee onto the scoreboard first, in the second inning.

Garrett Mitchell got things started by legging out an infield single, with the Brewers successfully challenging Mike Muchlinski’s out call at first.

After a Luis Rengifo walk, Sal Frelick singled to right to score Mitchell and then Hamilton laid a perfect bunt to the left of the mound to load the bases.

After Perkins struck out, Turang laced a two-run single to right and then got into a rundown between first and second in hopes of allowing Hamilton to score. Hamilton was eventually thrown out at home, a questionable decision with Contreras coming to the plate.

Contreras flew out to right for the third out, leaving the Brewers with the 3-0 lead.

Turang, meanwhile, has reached base in all 20 of his games this season.
