The National Weather Service Green Bay issued an extreme cold watch for the area from midnight Jan. 23 to noon Jan. 24 for “dangerously” low wind chills in the region.

The temperature starts to get colder Jan. 22, continuing into the overnight hours. Temperatures will fall to between minus 10 and minus 15 degrees.

It falls more Jan. 23 with a high around minus 5 degrees during the day, but there’s indications it could get even lower, said Kira Jesse, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Green Bay.

“We could be looking at setting record low maximum temperatures, meaning the coldest the high temperature has been on that day,” Jesse said.

It will feel even chillier, with the wind chills dangerously low from minus 30 to minus 48 degrees throughout Jan. 23 and Jan. 24.

People should bring pets indoors, limit their own time outside, and cover any exposed skin. The National Weather Service warns that frostbite could develop in as little as 10 minutes.

While the cold may be below the average, it’s not out of the norm for the Fox Valley in January.

“It’s definitely below the normal but this is not uncommon,” Jesse said. “Most winters, we see a cold spell like this and it’s certainly been much colder before.”
