What to know
The Bulldogs have been one of the steadiest teams in the Concho Valley the past three seasons under coach Jayson Wilhelm, who is entering his sixth season at the helm. This year will be a new test for Wilhelm after Miles graduated a large, talented and productive senior class in 2024.
Wilhelm said he is excited about the jump he expects from junior quarterback Liam Yancy, who was last year’s All-West Texas Newcomer of the Year after throwing for 2,472 yards and 43 touchdowns. Yancy will have a new cast of skill players around him this season, starting with wide receiver Kaden Karmany.
On defense, Wilhelm said he anticipates big years from defensive tackle duo Curry Smith and Jaxson Hohensee, who bring a lot of size to the trenches.
For the fourth year in a row, Miles will contend for one of the top spots in the district. Outside of state powerhouse Albany, the Bulldogs will battle with a rising Roscoe and Hamlin team vying for a better postseason position. If Yancy can help bring the new group of starters along, Miles has a good shot at continuing its success.
Coach Jayson Wilhelm on the 2025 season
“It’s going to be a lot of growing early on,” Wilhelm said. “I thought our first scrimmage went better than I anticipated, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean it was great. We got a lot of stuff we got to get better at. Iraan has a really good football team, but I thought we did some good things (against them).
“It’s hard. I know everybody wants to play for a district championship, but realistically, for us, having Albany in there, I still think we can get the two seed out of our district. That’s our expectation. Albany is going to be better this year than they were last year, in my opinion. But I still think there was enough space between us and the rest of our district that even if we don’t reach the same standard, I still think this group has got enough fight in them they’ll find a way to get the two or three seed at least.”
