When it comes to state tournaments in high school sports, there arguably is none more unpredictable than baseball.
The fickle nature of the sport, pitching matchups that favor a team one game but not the next and the single-elimination format makes many teams rightfully feel like they have a chance to make a deep tournament run.
There is a reason why only one school has ever repeated as champion in the state’s largest classification, and that was Bay City Western in 2014.
The unpredictability should make it a fun three weeks when the state tournament begins with pre-district games Tuesday. Winners of the district round (finals will be Saturday) will play in regional semifinal games June 3, with the winners of that headed to regional final games the morning of June 6.
After that, super regional games (equivalent to quarterfinals) will be played on the afternoon of June 6 to determine which teams make the semifinals in East Lansing.
Here’s a breakdown of how things shape up in all four divisions heading into the district round.
Division 1
Defending champion: Hartland
Top 10 ranked teams in coaches poll: 1. Birmingham Brother Rice; 2. Romeo; 3. Woodhaven; 4. Rochester Adams; 5. Bay City Western; 6. Detroit Catholic Central; 7. Oxford; 8. Hudsonville; 9. Mattawan; 10. Midland Dow.
Best Metro Detroit-area district: District 17 at Southgate Anderson. In this district, four of the five teams have at least 20 wins, led by third-ranked Woodhaven (28-5-1). The pre-district game Tuesday will be Wyandotte Roosevelt at Anderson, with the winner advancing to play Allen Park in the first district semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday. Gibraltar Carlson and Woodhaven is the other semifinal, with the winners meeting in the district final on Saturday afternoon. Another district to watch is District 28 at Macomb Dakota, where last year’s state runner-up and second-place finisher in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division will host a district that also will feature Clinton Township Chippewa Valley and Macomb L’Anse Creuse North teams that have each reached 20 wins.
Noteworthy: Defending state champion Hartland has a tough district draw as it aims to repeat, starting with a pre-district game Tuesday against Brighton. The winner will then have to play Okemos, ranked No. 11 in Division 1, and then likely Howell, ranked No. 17, in a district final. … From a statewide perspective, the best pre-district game Tuesday arguably is Midland Dow at Mount Pleasant. Dow is ranked No. 10 in the state, but Mount Pleasant usually is a traditional power and has been better this year after a rough 2025. Dow beat Mount Pleasant two out of three times during the regular season.
Division 2
Defending champion: Ada Forest Hills Eastern
Top 10 ranked teams in coaches poll: 1. Orchard Lake St. Mary’s; 2. New Boston Huron; 3. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep; 4. Williamston; 5. Richmond; 6. Dearborn Divine Child; 7. Parma Western; 8. Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills; 9. Saginaw Swan Valley; 10. Standish-Sterling.
Best Metro Detroit-area district: District 58 at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. Each of the five teams in this district has at least 14 wins, but it could be the best district solely because it has both St. Mary’s and Notre Dame Prep in it. They are arguably the two hottest teams in the state regardless of division, and barring upsets they will play in a state championship type of contest Saturday in a district final. Another district to watch is at Carleton Airport, where New Boston Huron will have to survive a district that also includes host Airport and Monroe Jefferson, which each have more than 20 wins. Between St. Mary’s, New Boston Huron and Notre Dame Prep, the top three teams in the Metro Detroit area and the state all would feel good about getting out of their respective districts.
Noteworthy: No. 4 Williamston and No. 7 Parma Western likely will meet in a Saturday district semifinal, barring an upset of Western by Jackson Northwest in a pre-district game Tuesday. … Two more ranked teams that will be paired in the same district locally is Dearborn Divine Child and No. 13 Garden City, which features arguably the state’s best pitcher in Michigan signee Ethan Armstrong.
Division 3
Defending champion: Traverse City St. Francis.
Top 10 ranked teams in coaches poll: 1. Traverse City St. Francis; 2. Brooklyn Columbia Central; 3. Lansing Catholic Central; 4. Detroit Edison; 5. Jackson Lumen Christi; 6. Niles Brandywine; 7. Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett; 8. Grass Lake; 9. Saginaw Valley Lutheran; 10. Elkton Pigeon-Bay Port Laker.
Best Metro Detroit-area district: That’s difficult to say given there aren’t as many area teams in this division. In recent years, the no-brainer answer would be the district involving state powers Detroit Edison and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, but this year the teams have been separated in the district round. Liggett is hosting a district that will include Detroit Community, Detroit Loyola, Detroit Osborn and Detroit Pershing, while Edison is in a district hosted by Ecorse that also will include Detroit Academy of the Americas, Detroit Northwestern and Hope of Detroit Academy. Liggett and Edison won’t even be in the same regional when in past years the winner of the district matchup has made runs to East Lansing.
Noteworthy: By far and away the best district on a statewide level will be at Jackson Lumen Christi, which will feature No. 2 Columbia Central, No. 5 Lumen Christi and three other teams boasting good records, Grass Lake (25-8), Leslie (23-10) and Napoleon (18-12). Leslie and Columbia Central will play in a pre-district Tuesday, with the winner playing Grass Lake in one district semifinal. Lumen Christi and Napoleon is the other district semifinal.
Division 4
Defending champion: Portland St. Patrick
Top 10 ranked teams in coaches poll: 1. Portland St. Patrick; 2. Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart; 3. Kalamazoo Hacket; 4. Beal City; 5. Fulton; 6. Breckenridge; 7. Fowler; 8. Petersburg-Summerfield; 9. Rogers City; 10. Harbor Springs Harbor Light.
Best Metro Detroit-area district: Similar to Division 3, there isn’t the depth of teams in the area that there are in Division 1 or 2, but an intriguing district is the one that will be hosted by Auburn Hills Oakland Christian. Capac enters at 16-8, while Oakland Christian (16-10) and Memphis (17-11) have winning records as well. Marine City Cardinal Mooney has lost 15 games coming in, but has played a tough regular-season schedule, and could be a factor as well.
Noteworthy: As is usually the case each year, Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart and Beal City could have a state-title game type of matchup in districts. Whichever team can advance is a big threat to win it all in East Lansing. There are also two more ranked teams who will be paired in the same district, defending state champion St. Patrick and Fowler. … There have only been two Metro Detroit-area teams to win a state title in Division 4 since 2013, that being Sterling Heights Parkway Christian in 2016 and Riverview Gabriel Richard in 2022. St. Patrick and Beal City have combined to win four titles since 2017.
