The Times Record News interviewed the two candidates who are running for Wichita County treasurer in the March 3 Republican Primary.
Burkburnett resident Joe Lemond, the facilities and security director at the Community Healthcare Center in Wichita Falls, is challenging incumbent Stephen Jones for the job that entails handling all the county’s revenue.
No one filed to run as a Democrat, so the winner of the primary is likely to win the term.
Why Lemond thinks he’s the better candidate
Lemond described himself as a more outgoing person who can ensure things are done when they should be.
“I feel like I’m trustworthy enough to take over the position, and I think I can get the job done a little bit better than the way it’s been done,” Lemond said. “I believe that there can be some upgrades and some changes made where we can ensure that all the checks and balances are in place that need to be in place.”
He said he would need to get into the office to see what specific things need to be changed.
Lemond on his qualifications
Lemond, a former Wichita Falls police officer, described himself as a “numbers guy.”
“I’ve owned a couple of my own businesses over the years, and my finances have always been great. I’m a very organized, very detailed oriented type person. And I just I think I’m the right man for the job,” he said.
“I’m excited about hopefully taking on this new role and giving the citizens what they need, especially the employees of the county, and help them out the best that I can and to be available for them,” he said.
