Two pretrial hearings in Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo’s removal proceedings have been canceled, according to city records.
The pretrial hearings that had initially been set for June 8 and June 9 would have, in part, discussed any additional motions by attorneys representing Guajardo and the petitioners requesting her removal, according to an agenda memo.
However, they didn’t appear to be currently needed, wrote City Secretary Rebecca Huerta in a June 5 email to the Caller-Times.
“There is no business to conduct now, but future filings may require consideration at a pretrial hearing,” she wrote.
If they become needed, new pretrial hearings could be scheduled as special meetings or included as part of a City Council meeting, she wrote. They could also be considered as part of the scheduled removal hearing.
A pretrial hearing had been held June 2.
The council members who are on the panel that determines the future of Guajardo’s office had set the dates of the removal hearing — July 22 and July 23 — and entertained motions by attorney John Flood, representing Guajardo, and attorney Doug Allison, representing the petitioners.
The removal hearing is in response to a petition submitted by six registered voters, requesting that Guajardo be ousted from her position on the council based on alleged misconduct or malfeasance.
The mayor has denied all allegations.
