One San Angelo Street ranks high on a new preservation list

A new study shows Concho Avenue in San Angelo is one of the streets most Texans want to see saved and revived.

The study comes from Market Beat, a financial media company that surveyed 3,012 respondents across the country on places they think deserve a comeback.

“Concho Avenue, running close to the Concho River, downtown San Angelo still carries the feel of a classic West Texas trading and ranching center with deep regional roots,” a narrative on the study released Tuesday said. “Concho Avenue remains lined with historic storefronts, stone buildings, and reminders of the city’s frontier-era growth that continue to shape the area today.”

Reviving Indiana Avenue in Wichita Falls topped the list in Texas.

The Downtown Commercial District in Beaumont placed second in Texas in the survey, and Concho Avenue placed third.

Texas respondents said they want to see diners, cafes and restaurants return to downtowns, with live music and entertainment venues and farmers markets and street fair also ranking highly.

More than half of those quizzed said they felt emotionally attached to historic downtowns and blame their decline on:

Eighty-three percent said small town Main Streets are worth saving.
