Texas A&M coach Mike Elko enters his third season with equally high expectations after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, something former coach Jimbo Fisher never accomplished during his six-year career. However, back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP were less than stellar.
This week, SEC media days will kick off in Tampa, Florida, starting on Monday afternoon, while Mike Elko, alongside three player representatives, quarterback Marcel Reed, safety Marcus Ratcliffe, and linebacker Daymion Sanford, who is coming off surgery from a lower-body injury during the Maroon & White spring game, will speak on Wednesday.
This offseason, Elko and his staff landed 17 transfer portal additions, combined with 65% of the 2025 roster returning, and 41 newcomers overall when combining the 2026 signing class. Marcel Reed’s second full starting season is significant after the Tennessee native threw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, while his 12 interceptions were tied for second in the SEC.
Needing to avoid the “mental mistakes” that led to just six touchdowns and eight interceptions against top 35-ranked defenses, first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins will be tasked with putting Reed in position to thrive in the pocket, while it’s up to the redshirt junior to improve his accuracy and ball placement.
Before unanimous All-American edge Cashius Howell was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, Elko landed a commitment from Northwestern edge Anto Saka, who checks every box as a future lottery pick.
