The Texas high school boys basketball playoffs are here.
Local West Texas, Concho Valley and San Angelo-area teams begin their playoff journeys on Monday, Feb. 23, hoping to reach the Alamodome in San Antonio for the state championship games March 12-14.
Last year, Goldthwaite and Garden City advanced the furthest from the Standard-Times’ coverage area, reaching the Class 2A Division II and Class 1A Division I state semifinals.
With the UIL split-division postseason format, the path to the state championship will look different than in some previous seasons. With fewer teams in the playoff pool, there will be one less round, and most regions will forego a regional tournament. However, the new format does have plenty of positives, including doubling the number of state champions.
