West Texas bakes as Arthur floods parts of state, but rain in forecast

While much of Texas experienced heavy rain and even flooding due to Tropical Storm Arthur off the Gulf Coast, Lubbock and the Panhandle-South Plains are seeing near-record heat and dry conditions Wednesday going into Thursday.

But that will change as soon as Thursday evening, with a cool front bringing an increasing chance of precipitation and even some storms starting Thursday evening going into the Juneteenth holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Lubbock.

Lubbock was expected to reach a high of 106 on Wednesday – shy of the record high of 112 degrees for June 17 set back in 2017 – but well above the 92-degree-average high for the day.

Those sweltering conditions prompted a heat advisory from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday for the far southern Texas Panhandle, South Plains, and Rolling Plains.

But relief is on the way.

“Thunderstorm chances return to portions of the forecast area Thursday and Friday,” reads a hazardous weather outlook from NWS Lubbock. “Severe storms will be possible Thursday evening off the Caprock.

Expect Thursday’s high to be a bit cooler at 97 degrees in Lubbock ahead of a cool front moving in later in the day, bringing a 60 percent chance for thunderstorms and overnight lows in the upper 60s.

Friday’s high will be in the mid-to-upper 80s in Lubbock and across the region, with a 50 percent chance for showers and thunderstorms during the day, decreasing to 20 percent Friday night before 1 a.m. Rain chances continue at 30 percent on Saturday, 20 percent on Sunday and 50 percent on Monday.
