TxDOT gives update on I-27 road work, I-40 safety upgrades

Multiple safety enhancement projects along I-40 and I-27 continue to move forward in the Amarillo District, transportation officials said in an update Thursday, April 30, including the six-lane upgrade of Interstate 27 between Amarillo and Canyon.

“Improving the safety of the traveling public is always priority number one throughout the construction project process,” said Amarillo Area Engineer Clint Harms. “From the early design phase to the construction phase, our TxDOT crews work diligently to ensure that safety is always at the forefront of everything we do here in the Amarillo District.”

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) provided a snapshot of what’s taking place in the area, the projects’ estimated costs, and when construction is expected to be complete, pending any weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances.

I-27 upgrade between Amarillo and Canyon

What’s being done now: TxDOT said crews are currently paving the northbound main lanes and expected to complete them by fall 2026.

Estimated overall cost: $312 million.

When it will be done: TxDOT expects the project to be complete by the end of 2028.

FM 2590 (Soncy Road) installation of turn lanes and signals, from SL 335 to US 60 in Canyon

What’s being done now: TxDOT said crews are performing drainage work throughout the project limits, and they recently completed the signal light installation at the Hunsley Road intersection.

What’s next: Signal lights will also be installed at FM 2219, Country Club/Buffalo Stadium Road, and McCormick Road.

Estimated overall cost: $28 million.

When it will be done: Early 2027.

BI-40 safety improvements, from Hope Road to SW Ninth

What’s being done now: Crews are constructing reduced conflict U-turn (RCUT) intersections in various areas throughout the project limits, as well as drainage and illumination work.

Estimated overall cost: $30 million.

When it will be done: End of 2026.

FM 1541 (Washington Street) ADA safety upgrades, bridgework

What’s being done now: TxDOT said this project kicked off in January, to improve mobility, safety, and connectivity for the traveling public. It includes Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) safety upgrades, including upgrading sidewalks, crosswalks, shared-use paths, driveways, traffic lights, and lighting, as well as bridgework.

Estimated overall cost: $11 million.

When it will be done: Summer 2027.

ADA safety upgrades on I-40 frontage roads, from Airport Boulevard to Lakeside Drive

What’s being done now: Similar to the FM 1541 upgrades, this project kicked off in January and also aims to improve safety, mobility, and connectivity for the traveling public. It consists of constructing curb ramps, shared-use paths, sidewalks, and driveways in this area.

Estimated overall cost: $4 million.

When it will be done: Fall 2026.
