The Cleveland Browns have done what has been contemplated for over a year, and in earnest since March. They traded the best defensive player in the game coming off a historic season, sending edge rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. The move comes less than a year after the Dallas Cowboys traded away their star edge Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
While there are a lot of similarities, with both teams being out of the playoff picture at the time of the trade away, and Garrett and Parsons being atop the pass-rushing mountain, there are enough differences to cloud the comparisons. Parsons was in the middle of a heated contract dispute, Garrett was signed to a deal that was recently amended that made it easier on the Browns to trade him than a normal well-paid vet. Garrett is also five years older than Parsons and most importantly, there was no desperation on the breath of the Browns’ front office like there was coming from Jerry Jones.
Does any of that matter when fans and analysts are sizing up the exchange and putting a Dallas lens on things? Let’s see…
