Trainer Todd Fincher eyes first ever Preakness Stakes victory

Horse trainer Todd Fincher has won multiple stakes type races during his career.

But on Saturday, May 16, at Laurel Park in Maryland, his focus is on winning his first thoroughbred Triple Crown race when he saddles The Hell We Did in the 14-horse, 1 3/16 miles Preakness Stakes.

How did The Hell We Did get to 2026 Preakness Stakes

In 2025, he finished first in his debut, which was a six furlong win at Remington Park in Oklahoma. He followed that up with a second place finish in the New Mexico Zia Park Juvenile stakes, which also was contested at six furlongs.

His 3-year-old campaign began March 15 at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino along El Paso’s city limits and he won a six furlong allowance race.

Fincher sent The Hell We Did to Kentucky to run in the 1 1/16th miles Lexington Stakes and he showed class in finishing second to Trendsetter.

What does Todd Fincher say about The Hell We Did

“To be in this type of race means you have a horse that can compete at a high level and The Hell We Did is improving, working well and I’m hopeful that he runs a great race,” Fincher said. “He improved in his last race and he still has room for improvement. He’s run well at different tracks and seems to be adjusting well to Laurel Park. To get a win or finish in the top three in a Triple Crown race would be special.”

What does The Hell We Did owner Joey Peacock say

“Todd has done a great job of getting the horse ready,” Peacock said. “The Hell We Did has made great progress. He has been at Laurel Park for three weeks and is doing well. He has gotten stronger and he handled going two turns well in his last race. We are excited for him.”
