Texas Tech women's basketball tops Villanova for March Madness win

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Texas Tech women’s basketball team picked up its first NCAA Tournament win since 2005 with a 57-52 victory over Villanova on Friday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Bailey Maupin led the Lady Raiders with 17 points, including 15 in the second half. Tech advances to the second round to face host LSU on Sunday.

9:49 p.m. — Texas Tech wins 57-52 to advance to the second round.

9:43 p.m. — Texas Tech leads 55-52 with 14.2 seconds remaining and possession.

9:37 p.m. — Texas Tech leads 53-49 with 52.3 seconds remaining. Lady Raiders have possession after a timeout.

9:29 p.m. — Texas Tech leads 50-47 with 3:08 remaining. It will be Lady Raiders ball out of a timeout.

9:19 p.m. — Texas Tech has its largest lead of the game at 46-41 with 6:46 remaining. Nunez sliced through for a layup just before a Villanova timeout.

9:13 p.m. — Villanova leads 41-40 after three quarters. A field goal by Jada Malone near the buzzer was wiped away after review determined it was a shot-clock violation.

9 p.m. — Villanova and Texas Tech are tied 36-36 with 2:48 left in the third quarter. Bailey Maupin has come to life after halftime, scoring the Lady Raiders’ past eight points. Her 3-pointer just tied it and prompted a Villanova timeout.

8:50 p.m. — Villanova leads 33-30 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Four more turnovers for Tech gives it 14 in the game.

8:32 p.m. — Jasmine Bascoe scored eight of her 10 points in the second quarter. Kelsey Joens leads Villanova with 12, but didn’t score in the second period. Denae Fritz has a team-high eight points for Tech, which committed 10 turnovers.

8:26 p.m. — Texas Tech and Villanova are tied 26-26 at halftime. Big East first-teamer Jasmine Bascoe picked up her third foul just before the break when Bailey Maupin drew a charge.

8:17 p.m. — Villanova leads 22-19 with 3:55 left in the first half, as officials review an out-of-bounds play.

8:12 p.m. — Villanova leads 20-17 with 4:58 to go before halftime. Tech has three more turnovers this quarter. Big East first-teamer Jasmine Bascoe has found some more room. She has four points in the second period on 2-of-4 shooting.

8 p.m. — Denae Fritz and Snudda Collins each have five points for Tech, which has six turnovers. Villanova turned those into nine points.

7:57 p.m. — Villanova leads 14-13 after the first quarter. Kelsey Joens continues to be red hot, leading the Wildcats with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from 3. It’s the second-most treys she’s hit in a game this season.

7:47 p.m. — Villanova leads 9-8 at the first break. Kelsey Joens, former roommate of Tech’s Jalynn Bristow at Iowa State, has all nine points for the Wildcats on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc.

7:35 p.m. — For the 32nd time in 33 games, Tech will start Nunez, Maupin, Fritz, Bristow and Sanogo. Villanova starts Jasmine Bascoe, Brynn McCurry, Kennedy Henry, Kelsey Joens and Denae Carter.

7:25 p.m. — Tipoff will be approximately 7:34 p.m.
