First responders are working at the scene of a grass fire near a school in Amarillo.
The Amarillo Fire Department said crews were battling the fire in the area of Northeast 24th and Grand, around Travis Intermediate School, and people were asked to avoid the area.
Per radio traffic, evacuations were possibly underway in the area, including for an apartment complex off of North Grand Street.
AFD said in an update on Facebook that “Travis 6th grade has been evacuated to Travis Middle School across the street on the south side.”
Assistance from the Texas A&M Forest Service has been requested.
The National Weather Service in Amarillo issued a fire warning at around 3 p.m., saying the dangerous wildfire is moving rapidly east at 3 to 5 mph, and it is impacting the northeastern corner of Amarillo around Mirror Street and north of 24th Avenue. The warning was issued at the request of the Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management.
Smoke and fire will present a threat to life and property in the area, and people are advised not drive into smoke. People should also be prepared to evacuate and follow all safety instructions from local officials.
A red flag warning also continues for the region.
This is a developing story; more information will be added as it becomes available.
