The family that has owned El Fenix Bakery & Grocery in the Lower Valley for 47 years recently expanded with a second location.
The Garcia family has opened the El Fenix Bakery No. 2 on Eastlake Boulevard in Horizon City.
Fransheska Garcia, daughter of Francisco Garcia, said the family had been looking for a location for about three years now to find the perfect spot. She graduated from UTEP with a bachelor’s degree in social work in 2018 and has a master’s in business administration earned in 2020 but decided she wanted to stay in the family business.
Her two other sisters also help in the family business. One sister Aylin Hernandez is the main baker for celebration cakes for both businesses. The other sister Lynette Garcia helps out but is planning to go to law school soon.
The first bakery at 8438 Alameda Ave. was started by Garcia’s grandparents Humberto and Maria del Carmen Garcia.
“My dad grew up helping out, sacking items and helping my grandpa until he was diagnosed with cancer,” she said, adding that her father took over the business after her grandfather’s passing.
“For many years, my parents worked tirelessly to keep our traditions alive, which allowed my sisters and I to grow up within the very walls of the family business,” she said. “Today, we are honored to carry that history forward.”
Garcia said the new location is the same type of set up with a bakery area, and a grocery side, along with some menu items like burritos and tortas and in-house made tortillas and tamales.
“That’s what we like to do — be a one-stop shop for customers that live around here and do not want to go the big store. They can come here and buy the bread and then the carnitas or salsas, etc.,” she said.
The bakery has all the popular Mexican breads like empanadas, conchas, maranitos as well as some specialty cakes and doughnuts.
