Texas Tech officially rules QB Brendan Sorsby ineligible

It has been a wild roller coaster of emotions for the Texas Tech football program since the end of spring ball. Since that time, Brendan Sorsby has taken a medical leave of absence to address an addiction to gambling. That started a journey that led to legal teams getting involved. On Monday, it was reported that Sorsby’s legal team filed a lawsuit against the NCAA seeking a quick resolution.

Another statement showed that the NCAA hadn’t received a reinstatement request from the Red Raiders as of yesterday afternoon. Shortly after the reported statement was shared by Pete Nakos of On3, the athletic department released the following statement regarding the reinstatement request.

After finalizing an agreed-upon stipulation of facts between Texas Tech University, the NCAA and Brendan Sorsby, the University has declared Sorsby ineligible for competition. Texas Tech intends to quickly initiate the reinstatement process.

Sorsby’s presence on the offense would be huge, considering that he was the No. 1 transfer portal prospect according to multiple recruiting services. While the rules are very clear on betting, it seems as though we are further and further away from what is legal these days. Not just on the betting front, which is on every telecast, podcast, and sports news website you visit. Look no further than how the NCAA and lawyers are fighting for eligibility. It seems that “eligibility” is just a formality these days. In college basketball, there are several players signing with teams after trying to go the way of the NBA.

If the NCAA wants to mimic ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?,’ where the rules are made up and don’t matter, just let Brendan Sorsby play football.
