Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt issues statement on Brendan Sorsby ruling

Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt released a statement on onday after Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a preliminary injunction, making him eligible for the 2026 season.

“As we have said before, we do not believe that the circumstances of Brendan’s case warranted permanent ineligibility,” he said.

“As he returns to our football program, we remain committed to supporting Brendan’s recovery and ensuring his compliance with the court’s order. A comprehensive support structure, including clinical care, monitoring, and compliance checks, will remain fully in place for the duration of Brendan’s time as a student at Texas Tech.”

Sorsby was suspended by the NCAA for the entire 2026 season after it came out that he had placed numerous bets over the past four years, worth approximately $90,000. Several of the best were on the Indiana Hoosiers when he was a member of the team. Sorsby took to Instagram to say how thankful he was to be able to play for Texas Tech.

“I’m very grateful for the endless support I have received throughout this entire process,” he wrote. “I am also grateful for the chance to rejoin my teammates. This opportunity comes with the responsibility to remain focused on my personal growth, the ability to learn from this experience, and to be able to use my situation to help others going forward.”

The injunction does suspend him for the first two games of the season, when Texas Tech plays Abilene Christian and Oregon State. It also states that the NCAA can not prevent him from “practicing, playing or otherwise participating on Texas Tech’s football team for the 2026 season.” He will be eligible to return for Texas Tech’s game against the Houston Cougars, their first Big 12 game of the season.

Sorsby emerged as one of the top transfers this offseason after two strong seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats, following two years at Indiana. During his time with the Bearcats, he completed 62.9% of his passes for 5,613 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in 24 games. He also rushed for 1,027 yards and 18 more touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry.
