Texas A&M (27-23, 10-17 SEC) will face No. 10 Georgia (40-13) on the road, starting on Thursday night, as the Aggies are looking to shock the country and sweep the Bulldogs during both teams’ final regular season series. After enduring an embarrassing sweep against the Missouri Tigers last weekend, the Aggies are not in desperation mode.
According to D1Baseball’s latest projections, the Aggies are listed as one of the First Four Out teams and need three to four more conference wins to rise in the RPI to the upper 40s in the rankings to have a chance at earning a bid to the regional round. It’s not impossible, but winning three consecutive games on the road in the SEC is extremely tough to do, and after last weekend’s performance, it’s hard to see this team accomplishing that.
However, it’s hard to completely doubt Texas A&M this season, mainly due to the Aggies’ series wins over Tennessee, Arkansas, and LSU, who are all headed to the NCAA Tournament as top seeds. Still, inconsistency at the plate has been the team’s largest issue, and on Wednesday, one of the team’s top hitters, Wyatt Heneseler, discussed A&M’s approach to playing behind the sticks before facing Georgia:
“I think there’s just a little more urgency from the get-go. I think you show up to the ballpark and you’re a little more on your toes. You’re a little more uncomfortable, and I think, sometimes, that’s a good thing.”
This is very true, especially after enduring three consecutive losses to the worst team in the conference, knowing that everything is on the line going forward. Before heading to the MLB, this is Henseler’s final college season, and you know that he wants to make it to the NCAA Tournament as much, or more as every player on the Aggies’ roster.
Texas A&M will face Georgia on the road in Game 1 on Thursday, May 15 at 5:00 p.m. CT. The game will stream on SEC Network+.
