What are you doing this weekend? That can be one of the most anticipated, and sometimes dreaded, questions at the conclusion of a busy week.
While the weekend finally provides much-needed me time, it can sometimes be daunting trying to figure out exactly what is going on to participate in.
That’s why we did the work for you and rounded up some of the top local events happening here in Abilene.
Here are three local events you won’t want to miss.
Summer Market at Avana
Soak up the sun and shop local at Abilene’s Summer Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at Avana Bank, 2118 S. Treadaway Blvd.
The event is hosted by Sunset Events and is slated to include a wide selection of local vendors, food and beverage trucks, and family-friendly fun.
The event is free to attend, and more information is available on the event’s Facebook page.
Garageband Woodstock
The 16th annual Garageband Woodstock will be Saturday, July 11, at the Abilene Convention Center, 1100 N. Sixth St.
This year’s theme is “The Last Dance” and bands performing include The Continentals, Hedley Lamarr, Outta the Blue, The Fabulous Furies, and Chevelle V. Plus.
Doors open at 5 p.m., and live music will begin at 6 p.m. An All-Star Jam will start at 10 p.m.
Tickets are available for purchase online, and funds collected from the event will benefit New Horizons, an organization that helps disadvantaged youth in the Big Country area.
YA Days
The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature and the Young Audiences Arts for Learning invites Abilene Youth to join them at the Children’s Museum, 102 Cedar St., on Friday and Saturday, July 10 and 11 for a fun weekend of free children’s programming and events.
Friday’s activities include a silent disco from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., story time at 11 a.m. and a movement-related art project available till 3 p.m. in the art studio.
Saturday’s programming will be centered around music with special guest Joseph Dixon, who will lead a drum circle from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A music-related art project will also be available for kids until 3 p.m. in the art studio.
YA Days are free to attend, and parents can find more information by visiting the NCCIL website.
