No. 7 Texas A&M (36-11, 15-9 SEC) is hoping to leave Saturday’s doubleheader vs. Ole Miss in Oxford (MS) with a series win, but given the program’s string of injuries, now including starting freshmen infielders Nico Partida and Boston Kellner, the Aggies are reeling and looking to at least salvage one victory before heading back to College Station.
Partida, who suffered a hamstring injury against Auburn last weekend, has not returned to the field since, missing the last three games, which has hurt the offense given his .317/.415/.585 slash line and 12 home runs on the year. Still, coach Mike Earley made sure to establish depth this offseason, specifically with the returns of infielders Blake Binderup and Ben Royo in case these injuries occurred.
Well, both reserve options might be in the lineup longer than expected, as Boston Kellner, who was hit by a pitch in the face during Friday’s first game of the series vs. Ole Miss, reportedly suffered a broken orbital bone after a fastball struck him above the eye, according to the SEC Network + broadcast, which confirmed the details.
However, Kellner reportedly did not suffer any eye damage or a concussion, which is obviously positive news, but his return timeline is unknown, with just one more regular series vs. Mississippi State next weekend before the SEC Tournament. After recording his first hit, a home run against Ole Miss during Saturday’s first game of the doubleheader, Ben Royo will likely continue to start in Kellner’s place.
