The Texas Tech football program doesn’t regard its first Big 12 championship and first College Football Playoff appearance as one-offs. It views those firsts as a launching point for more, and the Red Raiders’ recruiting class for 2027 is reflecting it.
The Red Raiders on Saturday, May 9, picked up their fifth commitment from a national top-100 recruit when Argyle wide receiver Julian Caldwell announced for Tech. Caldwell, listed at 6-foot and 185 pounds, was offered a scholarship by more than 40 schools, according to recruiting services, and ultimately chose Tech over Texas and Oregon.
Caldwell caught 94 passes for 1,737 yards and 20 touchdowns last year as a junior. Argyle finished 12-2 with a loss to Melissa in a Class 5A Division II state quarterfinal.
As a sophomore, Caldwell caught 21 passes for 581 yards and 7 TDs, helping Argyle go 13-2. The Eagles lost to Dallas South Oak Cliff in a Class 5A Division II state semifinal.
On the 247Sports composite index of top recruits, Caldwell is ranked No. 93 in the nation and No. 11 in Texas.
Tech’s other national top-100 pledges for the current class are Cedar Hill defensive lineman Jalen Brewster, ranked No. 1; Baltimore St. Frances Academy edge defender Anthony Sweeney (No. 23), Humble Summer Creek wide receiver Benny Easter Jr. (No. 36) and Palestine Westwood quarterback Kavian Bryant (No. 45).
The Red Raiders have a total of nine commitments, including three others among the top 50 in Texas on the 247Sports composite: running back SaRod Baker and defensive tackle K’Adrian Redmond from DeSoto and linebacker Jhadyn Nelson from Houston Langham Creek. The other pledge is edge defender Brody Pfannenstiel from Hoisington, Kansas.
