The Houston Texans could be without linebacker Jake Hansen for a bit of time.
Hansen, who is currently fighting for a roster spot during the early stages of training camp, suffered a lower-body injury during team drills on Thursday. He was lifted into the back of the cart and carried off for further evaluation.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said on Saturday that Hansen would be monitored on a week-to-week basis for an ankle injury.
“We’ll see,” Ryans said if there was any major concern for Hansen’s status going into 2026. “He’s kind of week-to-week. We’ll see how he progresses throughout camp.”
An undrafted free agent out of Illinois, Hansen has been part of the Texans for the last four years after reuniting with former Illinois coach Lovie Smith. Mostly an impact on special teams, Hansen has been a reliable depth piece at linebacker, totaling over 80 career tackles. Last season, he recorded 19 tackles.
The Texans are already down one linebacker with E.J. Speed on the PUP list to begin the year. Hansen wasn’t expected to compete for a starting job, but his veteranship and knowledge of the defense should have given him a nod over other options like rookie Aidan Fisher or fellow special teams standout Jake Hummel.
Houston returns to practice on Monday following Saturday’s first padded session.
