First responders from the Amarillo Fire Department were called out to a critical situation at Wonderland Amusement Park around 10 p.m. Saturday evening, when passengers aboard a roller coaster ride became stranded.
According to Jason Love, AFD Public Information Officer, Engine 4 responded Aug. 1 and evaluated the situation and determined that the rescue team was required for the incident.
Three units responded to assist, as 18 people waited on the Texas Tornado ride for rescue.
The ladder was set with the aerial apparatus, and first responders were able to help everyone get down safely from the stalled ride.
One person was evaluated by medical services at the scene, but it was unknown if the individual was taken to a hospital.
The incident comes as Wonderland is celebrating its 75th year of operation and new management. The new owner, Jimmy Holmes, purchased the park from previous owners, Paul and Paula Borchardt last winter. Holmes is the CEO of 360 Parks of America.
The Texas Tornado is a steel roller coaster and one of the first to be designed by North American water ride company Hopkins Rides. It is rated as one of the top 50 steel coasters in the U.S. and offers more than 2,000 feet of Texas-sized thrills.
Wonderland Amusement Park released a statement that said, “The Texas Tornado will remain closed while we conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause and complete any necessary repairs. The safety of our guests and team members is always our highest priority.
“We sincerely appreciate the Amarillo Fire Department for its prompt assistance and thank our guests for their patience and cooperation.”
There were no injuries reported in the Saturday incident, and more information will be released Monday.
