What should fans expect from Houston Texans’ second-year wide receiver Jaylin Noel going into his second season?
A former third-round pick of Iowa State, Noel was used sporadically during his playing time last season behind former Jacksonville Jaguars star Christian Kirk. In several games, Noel ended up being a factor in the passing game, mostly in matchups against the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Chargers.
In reality, the former speedy slot option was best remembered for his role in the special teams department. A kickoff returner and key punt returner, Noel should have a role with the Texans long-term, but finding a pathway into the passing attack as a No. 3 option seems to be the best course of action for now.
Overall, the Texans should have high hopes for Noel entering his second season in Nick Caley’s offensive look. According to Pro Football Network, the 5-foot-10 pass-catcher is a top-10 receiver from his class, just making the cut over fellow rookies like Las Vegas Raiders’ Jack Bech, New England Patriots’ Kyle Williams and Tennessee Titans’ Elic Ayomanor.
Noel looked promising during offseason workouts, seeming to have carved out more of a role inside the slot while running crispier routes. His chemistry with quarterback C.J. Stroud continues to develop while the role is expected to expand now full comfortable inside the offense under second-year play-caller Nick Caley.
“J-Noel’ has done a really great job as well, improving at his craft and how we’re able to move him around different areas,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said earlier this offseason. “He’s doing a great job as a kick returner and punt returner, we’re emphasizing him on working on getting vertical. He’s doing a really great job of working on those things as well. So, both guys are taking the necessary steps to improve.”
The Texans return for the start of training camp on July 28 with veterans. Rookies will report on July 21.
