Houston Texans defensive back Jimmie Ward was arrested early Thursday morning following a family violence incident at his home in Magnolia. The veteran defender is facing felony assault charges, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander.
Ward, who’s entering his third season with the Texans, was arrested on the scene around 5:30 a.m. At the time of the post, he remains held without bond, per the information from the Montgomery County Jail.
“We are aware of the report involving Jimmie Ward,” Omar Majzoub, the senior director of communications for the Texans, said in a statement to the Chronicle. “We are gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.”
A longtime defensive back for the San Francisco 49ers, Ward is under contract through 2025. The team added another year to his contract last season before he hit free agency.
For the final year of the current deal, Ward is owed $4.5 million and has a $5.6 million cap number.
Injuries have derailed Ward’s playing time over the past two seasons, but he’s been a fixture in the locker room and viewed as a team leader. He was voted captain by his teammates in both 2023 and 2024 while serving as a do-it-all player on the back end at both safety and in the nickel position.
In 10 games, Ward totaled 48 tackles and two interceptions. He also recorded 50 tackles and an interception in 2023 while helping Houston clinch its first playoff bid in four years. In Week 16’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Ward suffered a sprained foot that required season-ending surgery.
Throughout the first three weeks of offseason camp, Ward has not participated, nor been seen during drills.
Texans Wire will keep you updated on Ward’s status and the outlook with the team.
