Storms topple beloved mulberry tree at Album Park

Heavy rains cooled the El Paso landscape but also toppled an aged Mulberry tree at Album Park, on Album and Parkwood streets in El Paso.

Laura Cruz-Acosta, a city spokesperson, said the tree split into three sections during the weekend of June 19 and remains where it toppled. The area has been cordoned off with caution tape.

“The City of El Paso is aware that a large mulberry tree at Eastwood (Album) Park fell during overnight storms. Parks and Recreation staff secured the area with caution tape, and because of the tree’s size, removal will take several days,” Cruz-Acosta said in an email.

“While the loss of a mature tree is unfortunate, the city remains committed to expanding El Paso’s urban canopy. Through the 915 TreeKeeper program, residents and volunteers have helped plant hundreds of trees across the community to create a greener, more resilient El Paso,” she added.

El Paso is just starting monsoon season, which is typically from June 15 to Sept. 30. Heavy rains hit over the weekend and are expected to continue this summer.

El Pasoans on social media took time to reminisce about the tree, remembering hanging out with friends and cousins in its shade. Others referenced it as Stoner Tree.
