San Angelo police Chief Travis Griffith said Wednesday that “a complex and active homicide investigation” is underway, and a suspect has been arrested.
The homicide occurred on the north side of town, a San Angelo Police Department media release said.
“We want to address some of the reports of some body parts being discovered at the landfill,” Griffith said late Wednesday afternoon during a press conference on Facebook late Wednesday afternoon. “The San Angelo Police Department started an investigation of an unreported homicide this morning.”
He added, “We have discovered a homicide victim.”
He said the investigation had been primarily following leads police had been developing over about 12 hours, and they are investigating in multiple areas.
Griffith said police don’t believe there is any threat to the public, and no known gang connection has been discovered. However, there was a known relationship between the victim and the suspect.
For now, the name of the victim is being withheld, and police are still working on notifying everyone involved, he said. Police didn’t want to provide too much information at the press conference.
“I want to make sure that we give you the right information more than anything,” Griffith said.
He responded to a media question about whether an entire body was discovered at the local landfill.
“We won’t be going into details as to what was discovered just yet because we want to make sure that we, as we walk through any investigation, that each aspect of the case is properly documented, and we get through that,” Griffith said.
The chief said police would provide more information at another press conference on Thursday at a time not yet determined.
