Positional Spends: Cowboys criminally invest at edge, only outrank Dolphins

The Dallas Cowboys aren’t as lopsided as they once were. Last season, the team ranked seventh in overall spending on the offensive side of the ball and just 27th on defense. It was their lowest ranking since the 2020 season, coincidentally also the first season under a new, offensive-minded coach. Dallas’ offense has always outranked their spending on defense over the last decade, the closest season being in 2018 when the offense cost $72 million and the defense cost $64 million.

In 2015, the defense outspent the offense, barely, and in 2013 they were dead even. It’s safe to say that since the club uncovered the hidden gem of fourth-round compensatory pick Dak Prescott, the front office has skewed towards spending on offense.

That philosophy clearly jumped up to bite them in 2025, as they sported a historically bad defense under one-and-done DC Matt Eberflus. The organization is highly enamored with new DC Christian Parker, and they went out and spent a little to get players in place to run his new defensive scheme.

Heading into the summer, the club is still offense heavy. While they rank fourth in the NFL there in spending, shelling out $181.3 million, the defensive ranking did move up to $127.9 million, good for 18th at the time of this article being published.

Here’s a look at how much they are set to spend at each position, according to Over The Cap (where all of this annual data is sourced), and their rank across the NFL.
