One of the first theaters in San Angelo is getting a new facade and historical preservation after the City Council approved the funds for the project in a meeting Tuesday.
Aaron Vannoy, planning and development services director with the city of San Angelo, presented the project to council members.
They considered approving four North TIRZ private incentive projects totaling $300,000 and five South TIRZ private incentive projects totaling about $279,292. The projects ranged from new duplexes and renovations to adding a fire sprinkler and smoke alarm system to the $4 million steakhouse being constructed.
The historic theater is in the South TIRZ. The property at 121 N. Chadbourne St. requested $75,000 for its proposed project cost of $103,700.
Funds collected from a TIRZ or Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone are invested back into the zone to fund improvements.
“It is a facade and historic preservation of one of our first theaters that was in town,” Vannoy said.
Vannoy said the project includes cleaning the facade by replacing windows, landscaping, adding external lighting and doors and rebuilding the top section of the building.
Vannoy said the building is looking at possible occupancy for a cheer gym.
City Council members voted 6-0 to approve the item on the agenda.
