Lubbock County Clerk Republican Primary race heads to runoff

The race for the Republican Party’s candidate for the Lubbock County Clerk election this November will likely be decided in the May 26 runoff between Sandy Garcia and Jim Baxa.

Neither candidate garnered at least 50 percent plus one of the 25,638 votes cast to secure the position in the March 3 Republican Primary election.

Results show Garcia, a deputy county clerk, leading the three-way race with 45.93 percent of the votes followed by Baxa, a physical therapist, who drew 36.98 percent of the votes. Rebeca Gonzalez, also a deputy clerk, came in last with 17.09 percent of the votes.

The winner of the race will run against Democratic Party candidate Keri Poeling Padilla, a registered nurse, in the November general election.

Incumbent Kelly Pinon, who has served as county clerk for 20 years, announced her retirement in November.
