Larry McMurtry novel's 60th anniversary to be celebrated

The Larry McMurtry Literary Center will host a screening of “The Last Picture Show” movie at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Royal Theater in Archer City as part of free events celebrating the release of a 60th anniversary edition of the author’s novel of the same name.

The viewing will be followed by a panel discussion comparing McMurtry’s 1966 novel to its 1971 film adaptation, according to a media release from the center.

“Reviewers praised the novel, published in 1966, for its raw, unsentimental realism and its authentic portrayal of small-town Texas,” the literary center said in the media release.

The Royal Theater was central to both the novel and the movie, whose filming locations included Archer City and Wichita Falls.

A 60th anniversary edition of “The Last Picture Show” will be on sale during and after the event, according to the media release.

The new edition features an introduction by Thomas Powers, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who will discuss McMurtry’s coming-of-age novel, the press release said.
