Gina Hinojosa, James Talarico, Gov. Greg Abbott court base in Texas governor race

Democratic candidate for Texas governor Gina Hinojosa again capitalized on blue momentum in the U.S. Senate race and campaigned with James Talarico.

On Monday, June 1, she joined Talarico at a rally in Plano to energize thousands of Texas voters. Hinojosa again called out how Abbott’s “decades of corruption have led to higher costs and shuttered Texas public schools, and outlined her plans to freeze utility bills, protect schools, and ensure health care for every Texas child,” she said.

During the campaign stop, she contended Texas is leading the nation in bankruptcies, utility shutoffs and people without health insurance.

She also highlighted that more than 150 school districts do not have the funds to have school five days a week and that Corpus Christi could be the first major American city to run out of water.

“Especially in our great state of Texas, the American Dream was the promise that if you worked a full-time job, you could afford to own your home, to pay your bills, to have children, and to retire with dignity. The reason we pay more, and we get less is because we are all paying the Greg Abbott Corruption Tax,” she said.

Gov. Greg Abbott courts Texas veterans voting block

Gov. Greg Abbott also courted his conservative base by announcing $40.8 million in grants to support Texas veterans and their families.

On Tuesday, June 2, Abbott and the Texas Veterans Commission announced that money will support 190 grants to 160 organizations across the state. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations and local government agencies throughout Texas that provide direct services to veterans and their families.

The 190 grants are anticipated to serve over 125,698 veterans and family members statewide.

“Texas is proud to provide crucial services to support the brave men and women who selflessly served our nation in uniform,” Abbott said. “Through this more than $40 million in state grants, we strengthen services for Texas veterans, their families and surviving spouses, while we empower local organizations to provide critical care and support across our great state.”

Veterans, their dependents, and surviving spouses who need resources and assistance can find organizations serving their area by county in the Grant Services Directory.

Funding for these grants is generated primarily by the Texas Lottery games designated for veteran support. Other sources of funding for the grants include individual donation options on driver’s licenses, handgun carry licenses, outdoor recreation licenses for hunting and fishing, and vehicle registrations.
